At the European Geothermal Congress 2025 – Zürich, the paper “Best Practices for Harnessing Energy from Geothermal Wastewater” was presented by Horia Ban, Iulia Prodan, Alexandra Ban, and Doinița-Iuliana Cucueteanu.
The paper presents an innovative solution developed in Romania for recovering residual energy from geothermal water after its primary use. The system uses concrete tanks containing polyethylene geothermal probes connected to ground-source heat pumps, avoiding the corrosion and scaling issues encountered with conventional metal heat exchangers.
By harnessing energy that would otherwise be lost, this technology can enable the recovery of 50–100% of the residual thermal energy, reducing energy consumption and operating costs while contributing to the more efficient use of geothermal resources.
