Launch of the AccelerateEU plan by the European Commission

The Romanian Geoexchange Society (SRG) welcomes the launch of the AccelerateEU plan by the European Commission, which recognizes the central role of geothermal energy in strengthening the European Union’s energy security and economic resilience.

In the current context marked by geopolitical instability and energy price volatility, geothermal energy is highlighted as a strategic, local, and sustainable resource, capable of reducing import dependency and significantly contributing to achieving climate neutrality objectives.

The AccelerateEU plan emphasizes the major potential of geothermal energy for:
• electricity generation
• sustainable heating and cooling
• thermal storage

It also proposes concrete measures to accelerate the development of this sector:
• creation of a European-level geological database
• mechanisms to reduce investment risks
• insurance schemes and financial support
• strengthening international cooperation

For Romania, these directions are particularly relevant, given the significant geothermal potential that remains underutilized and the lack of a dedicated national strategy.

In this context, the Geothermal Energy Forum Bucharest 2026 (October 29, Bucharest) will represent an essential platform for dialogue between authorities, industry, and experts, aimed at aligning Romania with the new European directions.
